M Howard Davis Obituary (1934 - 2024) - White Plains, New York

M. HOWARD DAVIS June 17, 1934 - July 5, 2024Howard Davis, a longtime resident of Westchester County, N.Y. passed away on Friday, July 5,2024, surrounded by his loving wife and sons. He was 90 years old.Born in Savannah, Georgia on June 17, 1934, Howard moved to White Plains with his mother,Hassie Mae Davis, when he was three years old. He eventually attended Hillside ElementarySchool, Ferris Avenue School and Battle Hill Junior High. At White Plains High School, Howardwas President of the Junior and Senior classes and a star halfback and defender on the footballteam. A fractured spine, suffered while making a tackle on a muddy field against DeWitt ClintonH.S. in 1952, would change the trajectory of his life. With the support of the entire community, Howard went on to graduate from White Plains H.S. in1954, eventually earning a BS in Sociology from Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL.He later studied at the New York School of Social Work at NYU with an internship in Psychiatryand Social Work at Rockland State Hospital and pursued additional graduate studies atBridgeport and Fairfield Universities. Howard worked for four years as Assistant Director of the Carver Center in White Plains,followed by three-year stints at both the Bronx After Care Clinic and the Graham Home forChildren in Hastings.In 1963 Dr. Clarence Noyce invited Howard to join him in the Adult Education Program in WhitePlains. He began his 32-year career in White Plains in the Manpower Development TrainingProgram before becoming a counselor in SCORE, an alternative education program for WhitePlains Public Schools. When SCORE was discontinued, Howard became Guidance Director forWhite Plains Adult Education.Active in civic and community affairs, Howard has served on the Boards of the White PlainsHuman Rights Commission and The Salvation Army. He is also an eternal member of theOmega Psi Phi Fraternity, Beta Alpha Alpha Chapter of White Plains.Howard had been a member of the Mount Hope A.M.E. Zion Church since he was 10 years old.He was also a teacher at the Sunday School, on the Stewards Board and several othercommittees, including the Thanksgiving Dinner Committee which feeds the needy. Howard leaves behind his devoted wife of 50 years, Louvenia M. Davis. Three sons, Lance(Bea), Spencer and Russell (LaToya) Davis. Three grandchildren, Maxwell, Imke and RyannDavis. Nieces and Nephews Rudy Davis (Melinda), Kellye Davis, Mark (Corine), Iva, Markita,and Madison Mabin, Kyra Pitts, Kisha Watson, Mitchell and Matthew Mabin, Sean and DarrellMabin, Melvin and Vincent Bragg, Patricia Harris, and a host of extended friends and family.
