Joseph "Joe" P. Hollis, Jr Obituary (1936 - 2020)

Our beloved Joseph "Joe" P. Hollis, Jr., affectionately called both "Red" and "Junie" was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at Montefiore Hospital in New Rochelle after a short hospitalization. He was 83. A lifelong native of New Rochelle, Joe was born on December 6, 1936. He was preceded in death by his parents Ella and Joseph "Pickett" Hollis. After graduating from New Rochelle High School, Joe worked for the City of New Rochelle and later pursued a career with the Westchester County Department of Corrections. He was also founder and owner of Hollis Built Homes, Inc. Before returning to New Rochelle to spend the latter part of his years, Joe built a life in Elmsford. Joe had a great love for music and was in active member playing the drums for the Charles W. Dickinson Drum Corp. Besides music, Joe enjoyed home cooked meals, watching TV, handyman work, reading and spending time with family. Joe had a very generous heart and was the kind of man that would take the shirt off of his back and give it to you. Joe leaves behind to cherish his memory his four children Shavonne, Wendy, Gordon and Joy; two sisters Mary Whitfield and Cheryl "Shay" Hollis; two brothers Curtis Major and Michael "Mikey" Major; and preceded in death by his other brother, Benjamin "Johnny" Hollis. Joe is also survived by his seven grandchildren, great-great grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends. The family thanks you for your prayers and condolences during this difficult time. Joe was known and loved by many and will be deeply missed; especially in his hometown of New Rochelle. While his family grieves his loss, his faith was strong and he adored the Lord so we take comfort in knowing that he is now resting in the arms of our Heavenly Father. At his request, there will be no celebration of life.
