Esaw Dubois Obituary (1927 - 2016)

Esaw DuBois was born on May 17, 1927 to the late Bertha Fryar DuBois and Erasmus DuBois in Colleton County, South Carolina. He received his formal education in the Colleton County school system. As a child, he joined Buckhead United Methodist Church. In 1956, Esaw moved to White Plains, New York, where he joined Mt. Hope A.M.E. Zion Church, and was a member for over 50 years. He worked for the City of White Plains and, after leaving that job, opened his first convenience store on Hamilton Avenue in 1959. The following year, he opened Esaw's Chicken House at 10 Orawaumpum Street, where he cooked and fed many generations of the community. Shortly thereafter, he opened Perez Social Club on Main Street. Esaw then moved to Martine Avenue, and opened another entertainment establishment. His greatest joy, however, was when he and his son "Buck" opened Esaw and Son Luncheonette, a soul food eatery on South Lexington Avenue in 1970. People travelled from all over the tri-state area to patronize this business. Esaw is known by many, not just for his southern culinary skills, but also his kindness, generosity, and larger than life sense of humor. Those left to cherish fond memories are his loving and devoted wife of 71 years, Pauline Salley DuBois; their three children, Carolyn DuBois White (Kenneth), John Sherman "Buck" DuBois, White Plains, NY, and Priscilla Ann DuBois Williams (Edward), Moreno Valley, CA; seven grandchildren, Katrina LaShawn White Mosley (Jemal), White Plains, NY, Johnny Terell Coulter, San Diego, CA, Stacy Kevon DuBois Edwards Shires (Andrew), Harrison, NY, Ca'Chet La'Chic Williams and Chimera Charmaine Williams, Moreno Valley, CA, Nyrisha Janiquah DuBois, White Plains, NY, and Miranda Shallae Williams, Moreno Valley, CA; four great-grandchildren, Sebastian Andrew Shires, Jaidah Terell Coulter, Aleesha Erinae Garcia, and Ameara Emily Garcia; one brother, Emanuel DuBois, Sr.; four sisters-in-law, Almeta Hodges, Sadie Salley, Helen Rhodes, and Cindy Lewis; two special "sons," Wayne Day and Tony Evans; a special niece, Candis Rhodes; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Adam DuBois and Aaron DuBois; three sisters, Rhunell DuBois Yates, Elvie DuBois Yates Davis, and Mary G. DuBois Crosby.
