Dorris Muriel Thomas Obituary (1926 - 2016)

Obituary Dorris Muriel Thomas, was born March 24, 1926 in New York City to the late Marge Gilmore and DeWitt Gilmore, Sr. Muriel was a lifelong resident of White Plains, graduating from White Plains High School in 1944, and later attained a degree in business accounting. In 1948 Muriel was united in holy matrimony to Louis Rudolph Thomas, and to this union eight children were born. Louis predeceased Muriel on August 16, 1992. After retiring from the Reader's Digest Corporation and Gannett Newspapers, Muriel served as a volunteer at White Plains Hospital for the past 15 years. As a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Muriel served as president of United Methodist Women and faithfully served in several capacities including: church treasurer, and a member of the Inspirational Choir and Administrative Council. Muriel was an active member of several organizations including: Past Matron of Bright Hope Chapter 46 Order of Eastern Stars of White Plains, Past Illustrious Commandress of Elejmal Court No. 171 Auxiliary of the A.E.A.O.N.M.S., Magdalene Court No. 12, Order of Cyrene Past Royal Commandress, Pentecost Assembly No. 86 Order of the Golden Circle, and Martha Court No. 7 Heroines of Jericho, PHA. On Friday, January 15, 2016, Muriel was quietly called to her eternal home from Calvary Hospital. Left to cherish her fond memory are six sons, Larry, Michael, Terry, Howard, Stephen and Bruce; two daughters, Wendy Taylor and Paula Davis; one sister, Grace Orr of White Plains; two brothers, DeWitt Jr of Mount Vernon, NY and Raymond of White Plains; 27 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Predeceasing Muriel are her brother, Reverend Donald Gilmore; daughters-in-law, Gracie Thomas and Beverly Thomas; and brother-inlaw, Raifford Orr.
