Meherrin, Virginia
Darline Monk was born on October 2, 1931 in Mt. Olive, North Carolina to Berther and Ardelia Monk. She was the youngest of the twelve children:
Nathan, Eva, Josephine, Isabel, Arthenius, Arthur, Margaret, Raymond, Colene, Coldon, and Eleanor, all preceded her in death.
As the youngest in the family, life was easier for Darline and the opportunities were greater. Leaving the south after her mother's death and living
with Margaret and Eva on Grove St., her main chore was to go to school. She attended Rochambeau, Battle Hill, and later graduated
from White Plains High School. She entered the Metropolitan Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as a nurse in 1954.
After graduating from nursing school, she continued her education at Hunter College and graduated. After graduating from Hunter College and
working as a public health nurse in the Bronx, she was briefly married to Raymond Gilmore. She later moved to Mt. Vernon and continued to
further her education. Darline was a dedicated nurse for the majority of her life. When she retired, Darline continued to enjoy traveling, trying new
foods, participating in sports, social events, and joining different classes to learn new things. She also enjoyed spending time with her nieces and
nephews, walking through the parks in Mt. Vernon, and site seeing. Darline Monk leaves a host of nieces and nephews to mourn her passing.
